Sourdough starter – first try :)

2 Jan

After the terrible terrible ‘yeast packet inside the bread’ incident, I was pretty reluctant to bake anymore bread anytime soon 😦

We ran out of few stuffs inside the house, so after hubby finished his work yesterday, we went out to do some grocery shopping. Ow, and since my first sliding accident, I don’t really want to drive anymore during winter time! It happened about a week ago. After I got my Alaskan driving license, I haven’t went out and drive around. So, when we went out to do some shopping last week, I ‘foolishly’ volunteered to drive. Bear in mind, it’s not just the road conditions, a new city, a new car that I have to get used to, but also, in Indonesia we drive on the other side of the road, and the driver is on the other side of the car as well, that’s the hardest part that I gotta used to 😀

After a few going around the blocks because I keep missing some turns, finally we almost reach the destination. As I was driving nearing the intersection, the light turned yellow. So me, as a good driver, instead of giving it gas.. I started pushing on the brake pedal. The car was keep sliding and sliding and sliding!!!! I was HORRIFIED!!! I was literally standing on the clutch and brake pedals, butt off the seat, screaming on the top of my lungs, one hand clutching the steering wheel and another hand clutching my hubby’s arm. We finally came to stop right at the line though.. ffuuuhhhh…… and I am not ashamed to say, I cried a little bit after that because it was THAT terrifying 😦

Back to the bread story, so yesterday’s night at the grocery store, as I was reaching to grab some store-bought bread, my hubby said “you just got a brand new bread-making machine, why don’t you use it more?” argh…… -.-” I grabbed some bread flour instead of store-bought bread. We went back home and I made a simple white bread 😀 We had it for breakfast this morning, and it was delish 🙂 (note to self, take some pic next time)

Still on bread topic, I am now nurturing a jar of sourdough starter 🙂 I started the starter last night as well, after 3 hours the starter bubbled and frothed like crazy!

It calmed down a bit this morning, the size shrink to about half of it. Not sure whether the yeast still active or not…. The temperature inside the house is about 68, and the recipe says the temperature should be around 70 to 90… I hope 2 degrees difference wouldn’t make much difference. I wonder, should I put it in the sink with warm water to make the yeast ‘wake up’? hm… maybe I should eh….

Good story! I know you’ll have that bread maker mastered before long!
